I am so thrilled to be able to introduce you to some of the most fascinating characters in literature today. I’m talking about the leading ladies of Chick Lit—those enchanting, romantic, darling, sexy, sweet, funny, headstrong—and, let’s face it, sometimes downright frustrating—modern women who headline this fabulously fun genre. I'm sure you're going to love getting the skinny on these “novel” heroines, and who knows? You might just find your new BFF on the pages of one of these books! Without further ado, please put your hands together and show some love for today's guest... PHOEBE MERCER, and her ghost, EDIE EDWARDS! (APPLAUSE AS LIGHTS GO UP ON COUCH OPPOSITE OF CHUCK) PHOEBE: Thanks for having me Chuck...Hi everyone (shy wave), I'm happy to be here. (Edie: Oh for goodness sakes Phoebe, tell them about yourself!) PHOEBE: My name is Phoebe, I'm twenty nine years old, I love fruity teas and recently gave up being vegetation. I'm a legal assistant at a, actually I use to be a legal assistant- (Edie: Don't give away the plot of my book!) PHOEBE: It's our book, Edie...(looking at empty spot on cough next to her) CHUCK: (Laughs) I have to say, this is the first time we've had a actual ghost on our show. It's too bad we can't see or hear her! PHOEBE: I think its best that way to be honest. (Edie: (scoffs) Ha! If they could see or hear me, I'd give them a show to remember!) CHUCK: So Phoebe, tell me, tell us...(dramatically leans forward in his chair) If you where a shoe, what kind of shoe would you be? (Edie: Simple. A patent leather, continental heel, white and black. By Kramers Shoes in Cedar Springs, circa 1941.) PHOEBE: He was asking me Edie...if I where a shoe, I would be probably be a simple, black ankle boot. With a cute zipper on the side, or maybe a buckle or two. It goes with everything. (Edie: BORING!) CHUCK: (Smiles) Sounds great! Now, What are the three items you would absolutely need to have with you if you were shipwrecked on a desert island? (Edie: My clothes, my headbands, my-) PHOEBE: Three things Edie, not three sets of things...Chuck, I think I would need my three best friends. Clara, Satine and Faye. We've known each other for years and we work really well together, I think we'd be able to find a way off that island in no time. (Edie: Oh for hell's gates...(rolls her eyes)) CHUCK: Very touching answer, Phoebe...If you only had 15$ to spend on a date, what would you do? What if you had 50$? 5,000$?! (Edie: (snorts with laughter) This ought to be good...) PHOEBE: Oh, ummm that's a hard one for me. I'm single now, I haven't been on a date in years...I guess if I had fifteen dollars I would go out for ice cream. Do people still like ice cream? Or is that faux pas because ice cream is high in calories? If I had fifty to spend, well, there's this really cute Italian bistro in the city, by the water I went to once. I'm not sure what I'd do on a date if I had five thousand dollars...I'd probably ditch the date and use the money to pay off a loan... (Edie: How riveting...not. You're losing the crowd Phoebe, livin' it up!) CHUCK: Phoebe, were going to get a little bit serious here...Your best friend is asked to describe you in five words. What would they be? (STIRRING FROM THE AUDIENCE) PHOEBE: I think my best friend would describe me as relentless, restless- (Edie: -naive) PHOEBE: (Darts a look to her left and frowns)...a little bit naive, friendly, and imaginative. CHUCK: And how would your nemesis describe you? (raises an eyebrow) PHOEBE: (Makes a face) That one is easy. I'm sure he'd say I'm lazy, annoying, nosy, useless and dishonest. CHUCK: Yikes. He doesn't sound like a very nice person if you ask me. Let's move on to our final question now Phoebe...If you could be the heroine in any chick flick, who would it be and why? (Edie: Cruella De Vil has a fantastic wardrobe.) PHOEBE: Cruella De Vil isn't a heroine, Edie. She's a villain. (Smiling now at Chuck) It's a toss up, Chuck. Is Pride and Prejudice considered Chick Lit? If so, I would love to be Elizabeth Bennett. She's so strong, witty, smart...but it's not considered Chick Lit is it? If I couldn't be Elizabeth Bennett then I'd want to be Bridget, Bridget Jones. She's spunky, fun and full of life. Everybody underestimates her, and I can relate to that a little bit. CHUNK: I'm a fan of Bridget Jones myself, you know I just love her accent, it's so cheery and fun! Well, Thank you both so much for coming on the show today. (Smiling and turning back to the crowd) Let's all give Phoebe and Edie a round of applause shall we? (Applause) And don't forget, their novel, Haunting Me is out MAY 31ST via Amazon.
